Navigating the World of RC Rock Crawlers: Recommended Models for Beginners

RC Rock Crawlers: for Beginners

Learning all about the world of RC rock crawlers can be an exciting process. However, finding the right car, considering the number of intimidating options on the market can be extremely difficult. Luckily, I have some recommendations for beginners.

But to be clear, narrowing the list down to these four was not a small job. I considered plenty of features and price points; ultimately, these four were the best. Here is my list of the best beginner-friendly RC rock crawlers; feel free to check it out.

Axial SCX10 III Rock Crawler

Features

  • 2.4GHz radio
  • Replica V8 motor
  • Bead lock wheels
  • 2-speed transmission

What I Like

  • It comes in a classy rugged design
  • The tires offer unmatched grip on different terrain
  • It is waterproof
  • It comes in many colors

What I Don’t Like

  • Battery and charger are not included.

Overview

Function and ease of operation are the top factors to consider when choosing a beginner-friendly recommendation. Nevertheless, style and good looks should be second. Fortunately, the Jeep Wrangler is nothing short of these factors. It is designed to be a more miniature replica of the full-size car, and so far, I am impressed.

The Wrangler has been through numerous upgrades since it was first launched though its name first surfaced over three decades after. The rock crawler version is both sophisticated and durable. It comes with DSMR technology radio for extended range and lifespan.

The decent ground clearance is ideal for bumpy trails and wet & muddy terrains. This impressive RC rock crawler also delivers increased torque with reduced energy output. Something else I should mention is that this is a RC kit but a novice-friendly one. It takes less than 60 minutes to assemble, and when done, you’re in for some fun!

The Nitro Trail tires are larger than most and offer improved traction. Besides, they will ensure you navigate the roughest trails, while the durable build guarantees an extended lifespan.

Unfortunately, the charger and battery are not part of the package.

Laegendary RC Rock Crawler

Features

  • Extended battery life
  • Brushed motor
  • Two-speed modes
  • Off-road capabilities

What I Like

  • It features an LED light bar
  • The waterproof construction makes it perfect for all-weather use
  • It comes in two colors
  • It has a 4WD suspension setup

What I Don’t Like

  • It is quite heavy

Overview

This off-road RC rock crawler is the best companion when traversing those rough terrains. It comes with an LED light bar, a functional winch, massive tires, and a push bar, making it an ideal buy for anyone who prefers off-roading.

This impressive truck can tackle any terrain and comes with everything you will need to start rock crawling. The adjustable hi/low dual speed option transmission allows it to upshift when you want to accelerate and downshift whenever necessary.

The metallic frame also delivers a rigid drive experience while at the same time lets the suspension absorb any bumps and shift in grade.

The motor, which, as pointed out, is brushed, produces torque when required and uninterrupted acceleration when driving on even surfaces and, at the same time, ensures the car does not roll over on the trail even when you decide to turn at high speeds.

This car’s dimensions stand at 21.45 by 9.37 by 11.6 inches, and it weighs less than 10 pounds, excluding the remote control. It comes in orange or blue-green colors so if you don’t like one you can choose the other. The blue-green option does come with old-school vibes, though.

The versatility and robustness of this RC rock crawler are unrivaled, while the waterproof features allow you to drive it through wet and muddy surroundings.

Traxxas TRX-4 Sport

Features

  • Durable nylon, steel construction.
  • Completely locked rear and front differentials.
  • Waterproof electronics.
  • Lightweight construction

What I Like

  • 4 by 4 ability
  • Well-designed TRX-4 exterior
  • It is highly versatile.
  • It features a sturdy steel and nylon body.

What I Don’t Like

  • It only comes in one color.

Overview

Built as a replica of the Toyota Tundra, this RC truck is a beast on the track or wherever you decide to drive it. Besides, its durable build ensures you can drive it for years. The full-size car can climb hills and go off-roading effortlessly, which is what you should expect from this 1/10 scale-size replica.

Designed with highly robust steel and nylon, it is unpredictably lightweight, weighing a mere 8.5 pounds. This makes it easy to carry around, and when driving, it can climb and cruise faster than the usual RC rock crawler.

The chassis has great balance thanks to the wheelbase and decent ground clearance. This makes driving through even the roughest terrain, like rocky, muddy, and sandy trails, easier. Something else you will appreciate is the waterproof build which guarantees all-weather use.

Unfortunately, the package does not include batteries, but once you purchase compatible batteries, this truck will give you up to 20 mph maximum speed. The tires are rock solid and will conquer even the huge boulders.

The portal axles on this truck are more lightweight than most and move independently, which lets the truck navigate through rocks and other uneven trails. The highly powerful motor offers this RC truck ample torque for easy maneuvering through challenging terrains.

Lastly, the completely locked rear and front differentials offer this RC rock crawler sufficient traction, while the one-speed transmission setup is perfect for rock crawling.

Redcat Everest 10 Rock Crawler

Features

  • Aluminum chassis
  • 2.4GHz radio
  • Tunable suspension
  • Modifiable ride height

What I Like

  • It is highly versatile
  • It features an extended wheelbase
  • The ground clearance is decently high
  • It has a lightweight build

What I Don’t Like

  • It has a smaller exterior shell.

Overview

My last recommendation for beginners is the Redcat Everest 10. This is most suitable for the person who prefers performance over looks. It is constructed using aluminum, hence is extremely lightweight and durable. The weight is 8 pounds, making it the lightest RC rock crawler in this review.

Most of the weight is due to the tires, which provide an extended wheelbase and impressive ground clearance. This makes it perfect for crawling. The oil-filled shocks help this rock crawler drive excellently through challenging terrain and reduce wear and tear.

Furthermore, this RC rock crawler has waterproof electrical elements, facilitating all-weather use. At the same time, the increased torque lets this crawler transmit power to boost it over numerous types of obstacles.

The fact that this is a 4WD means it transmits energy to the wheels that demand it the most.

With this review, I hope you can find an RC rock crawler that’s perfect for your needs as a beginner.
